Most people know about fight or flight. What they don't know is that there are two more responses sitting quietly alongside it: freeze, and fawn.

Key Takeaways
- Nervous-system regulation is an important starting point, but it doesn’t address the underlying cause.
- Nutrition, trauma and deeply held beliefs can contribute to ongoing dysregulation.
- Once the body feels safe, functions such as clear thinking, digestion and hormonal balance may improve.
Your nervous system reads a threat and makes a decision in a split second. Fight. Flight. Freeze. Fawn. It's not weighing things up. It's not asking you. It's deciding, on your behalf, what will keep you alive.
And here's the thing. It genuinely believes it's making the right call.
That response was built for a different world. One with real, physical danger. Something trying to eat you, or something you needed to catch to eat. The threat would come, your body would respond, and then it would pass. Calm would return.
These days the threat rarely passes. It's not a predator anymore, it's a full inbox, an argument that never got resolved, an old wound that never quite healed. But your nervous system hasn't caught up. It still reads all of it the same way it read the sabre tooth tiger.
So it stays switched on.
Regulation helps. It's not the whole story.
When I work with someone, we always start with the nervous system, because a nervous system in high alert isn't interested in anything else you try to do for it. It needs to feel safe before anything else can shift.
But I want to be honest with you about something. Calming your nervous system down is not the same as solving what's underneath it. Breathwork, grounding, a moment of stillness, these are real and they help. But they're a regulation tool, not a solution. They quiet the alarm. They don't ask why the alarm keeps going off in the first place.
That question, why doesn't your nervous system feel safe, is where the real work actually begins.
Going underneath it
Sometimes what's underneath is nutritional. A body that isn't nourished properly can't feel calm, no matter how much you try to convince it otherwise. Sometimes it's old trauma. Sometimes it's simply never having been shown another way of being in the world.
And very often, when we go looking, we find a belief sitting quietly underneath everything. I'm not enough. I'm not lovable. I have to put everyone else first. Most of us have carried one of these at some point in our lives, whether we've said it out loud or not.
This is where kinesiology comes in for me. Not guessing, not assuming. Asking the body directly what the real challenge is, and asking the mind too, until we find what's actually driving the dysregulation rather than just managing its symptoms.
What becomes possible once the body feels safe
Once we find that place of calm, other things start to work properly again. Memory improves, because the brain can finally file things away properly instead of in fragments. Thinking clears, because the part of your brain responsible for reasoning comes back online. Digestion returns, because rest and digestion have always been two sides of the same coin.
This matters enormously for anyone dealing with period problems, hormone imbalances, or fertility struggles. Your body draws on progesterone and testosterone to fuel its survival hormones when it feels under threat, which means survival comes first and reproduction comes a distant second.
Many people assume irregular cycles or low libido are just something to live with. They're not. Often, they're your body telling you, quite clearly, that it doesn't feel safe enough yet to worry about anything beyond staying alive.
A small place to begin
You don't need to overhaul your whole life to start shifting this.
Slow, deep breathing helps. So does grounding, feet on the earth, however that looks for you. Humming, singing, even gargling, believe it or not, all activate your vagus nerve, which acts almost like a handbrake on fight or flight.
And next time you notice your body bracing, try asking yourself one simple question: am I safe right now? If the answer is yes, let yourself actually notice that. Let your body hear it, not just your head.
It's small. But it's often exactly where the shift begins.
If any of this feels familiar, you're not broken, and you're not alone. Your nervous system has just been doing its best to protect you. If you'd like some support finding what's really underneath it, I'm here.
