In life, we are constantly faced with a myriad of decisions, both big and small. From the moment we wake up to the moment we go to bed, we are presented with choices that shape our experiences, our relationships, and our future.

The Power of Choice: Embracing Freedom in Life
Yet, amidst the chaos of everyday life, it’s easy to overlook the profound significance of choice and the transformative power it holds. It’s also easy to overlook the amount of choice that we truly do have, and paradoxically to also feel overwhelmed and paralysed by the choices we have.
Understanding the Essence of Choice
At its core, choice is the essence of freedom, and we all want to feel free. It is the inherent ability of individuals to make decisions and take actions that align with their values, desires, and aspirations, which makes it so important for us to recognise how much choice can either empower or restrain us. Choice empowers us to shape our own destiny, to chart our own course in life, and to pursue paths that resonate with our authentic selves.
The Paradox of Choice
While choice is often celebrated as a symbol of freedom, it can also be a source of anxiety and overwhelm, even paralysis in decision making. In a world where options abound, the abundance of choice can lead to this decision paralysis, avoidance and feelings of dissatisfaction. However, it’s essential to recognise that the true power of choice lies not in the quantity of options available, but in the quality of our decisions and the intentionality behind them. So what do we do with this information?
Cultivating Awareness
The first step in harnessing the power of choice is cultivating awareness. By becoming mindful or aware of our thoughts, emotions, and behaviours, we gain insight into the underlying factors that influence our decision-making process. Through practices such as meditation, journaling, and self-reflection, we can develop a deeper understanding of ourselves and our values, allowing us to make choices that are aligned with our authentic selves. These practices work by bringing conscious awareness to unconscious patterns. Conscious awareness gives us the opportunity to make different choices that are better in alignment with who we are and where we want to go.
Embracing Responsibility
With choice comes responsibility. Each decision we make has consequences, both for ourselves and for those around us. These consequences can be either beneficial or unwanted. By accepting responsibility for our choices, we reclaim agency or control over our lives and recognise our capacity to effect change. Rather than viewing challenges as obstacles, we see them as opportunities for growth and transformation. When you face a challenge, this is an opportunity to ask yourself what is the lesson, or the opportunity in this?
It’s important to recognise that from the point that you decide to get out of bed in the morning, everything you choose to do is actually a choice. When it doesn’t look like a choice, it’s because you’ve decided even subconsciously that the consequences of the alternative are not something you’re willing to bear.
Are you someone that thinks “Ugh, I have to go to work today”? Firstly, the mindset is a choice, and secondly, going to work is a choice. You don’t have to go to work, you are not being forced to. It’s because there are other consequences to not going to work, and at some part of your being, these consequences aren’t worth it. Awareness and recognition that you are choosing to go to work goes a long way towards shifting your mindset, and the feeling sense of lack of choice.
Cultivating Resilience
Inevitably, there will be times when our choices lead to unexpected outcomes or challenges – the unintended consequences. In these moments, cultivating resilience becomes essential. Resilience enables us to navigate adversity with grace and determination, recognising that setbacks are not failures but opportunities for learning and growth. By embracing resilience, we harness the power of choice to overcome obstacles and emerge stronger than before. Remember to ask yourself what is the lesson, or the opportunity in this?
I love the acronym F.A.I.L. – First Attempt In Learning. This redefines failure as an opportunity to have another go. We didn’t learn to walk or talk the first time we tried it, but we kept going until it worked. This is resilience in action, and every one of us reading this article has already mastered the skill of reading by the use of resilience and also choice. It’s fascinating to look at things in this way – we learnt the life skills that we needed as small children, we just don’t recognise that we have the tools we need and they apply in big and small ways all through our lives.
Embracing the Freedom of Choice
Choice is not merely a matter of selecting between options; it is an expression of our freedom to shape our lives according to our own values and aspirations. By cultivating awareness, embracing responsibility, and cultivating resilience, we harness the transformative power of choice to create lives that are meaningful, purposeful, and fulfilling. So, as we navigate the journey of life, let us remember the profound gift of choice and the infinite possibilities it holds.
How Does Kinesiology Help With Choice?
Kinesiology uses the biofeedback of muscle monitoring to uncover stresses and imbalances in relation to any issue. When it comes to choice, a professional kinesiologist can help you uncover the unconscious patterns, thoughts, and beliefs that lead to us feeling like we have no choice, or that choice is overwhelming. It can also help you release any energetic blocks with these issues, or even with decision paralysis.
Kinesiology can support you with developing resilience by resolving the stresses that lead to this state, and help you to live a life of alignment by uncovering what is out of alignment on all levels of mind, body and soul.
